I used to have a lovely “craft room”. A whole room just for my stuff. I had two long Ikea tables in there and a corner book shelf. I had yarn in wire cubes and mostly pretty baskets on the tables and shelves. In the closet I had all my books arranged, my bags hanging, my magazines and printed patterns mostly sorted. It was wonderful. I was slowly losing space to chemistry project supplies and sewing supplies (I hate to sew but sometimes can’t avoid it) and beading supplies and holiday wrapping materials. But it was still my craft room.
This is how that room looks now. We’re changing our 5 bedroom 1 bath house into a 4 bedroom 2 bath house. And the best place to put that new bathroom is where my craft room used to be.
You can see here how the bathroom will eventually look.
You can maybe imagine how my craft room used to look too (corner bookshelf where the toilet sits now, long tables along the wall where the vanity and shower will be and along the wall across from them). I can’t show you how wonderful it was because as far as I can tell – I never took a picture of my craft room. Possibly because it was always kind of messy and not photo ready. You can also see how very messy a DIY remodel looks in the middle.
Before you feel too sorry for me, you should know that I’ll someday have a new craft room. Here is a look at how it looks now. We’re converting an unfinished attic storage space into a new craft room.
Because older houses have additions on top of additions, this space is actually on the second floor just down the hall from the old craft room. I’m thrilled I won’t have to climb the attic stairs into the actual attic to get to my yarn. Also thrilled my yarn won’t be sharing space with the bats that still seem to find a way inside now and then.
Pinterest tells me it will be beautiful with shelves and book cases and finished floors. These are a few of the possible ideas for this space that caught my eye. When we finish, you better believe I’ll take pictures of my craft room!! And I’ll post an update for the finished space. Fair warning though – don’t hold your breath. I suspect that once the drywall is complete and the window is installed, I’ll move in and we’ll figure it out from there. I can’t imagine being unable to spread out my yarn and finished samples and books and stuff for as long as it would take to actually complete the remodel. So I’ll move my stuff in and slowly rearrange it over weeks and months to get the space how I want it. Between now and then, if I seem a little scattered it might be because of all the remodeling dust and noise.
In the meantime, you should probably feel sorry for the younger boy. He gave up some prime real estate in his bedroom to safely store a good chunk of the craft room. See his Arrow of Light plaque on the wall behind my stuff and his wire shelves of Legos and projects that he can’t easily reach? His desk is behind all that stuff too and completely unusable for the time being but since he mainly does his homework on the dining table that isn’t a big loss. I hope he doesn’t need anything out of the desk drawers anytime soon though.
