Pattern Spotlight: Market Day Cowl

market day flat 1676

Published in May of 2017 the Market Day Cowl combines basic purls, knits and cables with vibrant colors to evoke the beautiful traditional textiles of West Africa. Market Day Cowl is extra-long so it can be looped once for a draped-scarf feel or twice for colder days.

Sample is knit in Wonderland Yarns Mad Hatter in the colorway Shillings and Pence and evokes the traditionally indigo-dyed Leppi Cloth from Guinea where my husband and I were Peace Corps Volunteers.

Sneak Peak: Bletchley Park Cowl

bletchley park cowl 4473b

The Bletchley Park Cowl test knit is almost finished. Inspired by the top-secret center for decryption that provided vital intelligence and helped win WW2. The Bletchley Park Cowl uses simple knits, purls and twists to evoke the interconnected pathways of codes and ciphers in an all-over texture. This cowl is a warm and cozy addition to any wardrobe.

This cowl uses the tiny cables or twists discussed in last week’s post.

The pattern will be published just as soon as I finish final edits at the end of the test knit. The test knit deadline is coming right up on February 16th!

Interesting side note: Bletchley Park recruited some 10,000 people by the height of code-breaking in 1945 and two-thirds of them were women. Learn more about the work they did and how they helped win the war here and here and here. I’d love to be able to visit some day with my boys.

New Pattern: Sedona Cowl

sedona cowl 2626

The Sedona Cowl uses simple knits, purls and basic cables to evoke the vortexes in the Sedona area of Arizona. Vortexes are swirling centers of subtle energy coming from the surface of the earth. The Sedona Cowl is perfect for a quick, easy gift as well as a good introduction to cables. The cowl is extra-long for a draped-scarf feel. Cables are written and charted. Sedona Cowl is part of my Arizona Collection along with the Rock Art Shawl and Grand Canyon Scarf.

Pattern Spotlight: Beatrice Cowl

beatrice-5.jpg

Published in 2016 the texture of Beatrice Cowl uses simple decreases and yarn-overs to evoke the movement and flow of water or flames. My inspiration for the design came from the Elemental Mysteries book series that I was reading at the time. I even named the pattern after my favorite water vampire from the series.

Cowls are some of my favorite patterns to design and to knit. Because they are relatively small with fewer stitches and rounds than a sweater, they are great introductions to new skills like simple lace or cables. They are also perfect for quick and easy car or travel knitting.

Because I originally designed the pattern with a water vampire in mind, I chose blue for my first sample. But as you can see from the projects page, the design is adaptable and looks nice in a range of colors – including blues, reds, pinks and even color-transitioning yarns.
